Brace for high temperatures this week as the mercury reaches 90 most days and the heat index values could top 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana says temperatures and dew points will increase throughout the week which will give heat index values near or above 100 degrees every day this week.

The heat wave starts today with lots of sun and a high near 91. Calm winds from the south will help the heat index reach 97. Expect a repeat of those same conditions through Thursday.

On Friday, the National Weather Service is forecasting a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, but still hot with temperatures reaching into the low 90s. While there is now a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday, expect partly sunny skies and a slight cool down with a high near 84. Sunday’s high will be near 82.

Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States so it is extremely important to be prepared. If you must be outside, wear sunblock, a hat and sunglasses to limit exposure to ultraviolet rays. Also:

  • Drink plenty of water and avoid drinks that contain caffeine.
  • Wear lightweight, light colored clothing.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioned vehicles or buildings.
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (skin begins to feel hot, headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting. Seek medical attention immediately if those signs present.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning or do not have the ability to get to a building with air conditioning.
  • Don’t forget pets and outdoor animals. Provide them with plenty of fresh water, keep them in shaded areas and limit the amount of time they are confined in areas without air flow.
